illustrations of the performance of the skin – the system allows for multiple conditions relying on the placement of the fabric along the ‘spike’ member

Images from jury review held Monday, October 26, 2009
These views were an initial approach to apply lighting to the structure and to illustrate the spatial qualities of the inverse spaces and rotation of the skin/structure system.

Prior plan and section of configuration of two separate forms aligned to create an interstitial ‘through’ space or channel between the larger event space and the smaller social space.

Photos of a physical model of possible skin configuration.

Diagram of the forms layers and an extracted portion of the initial version of the structural framework detailed and dimensioned at half scale.

Planar slices through hemisphere forms of different sizes provided a basis for simple form and condition exploration. Manipulation of the dome pieces original form provided opportunity to further splice the forms and utilize section cuts to connect pieces into more cohesive elements. Considerations in resurfacing include stripped members and skin application to vary the density of the parts within a parallel network.
In 2002, Ned Kahn worked with the staff of Technorama, the major science center in Switzerland, and their architects, Durig and Rami, to create a facade for the building which is composed of thousands of aluminum panels that move in the air currents and reveal the complex patterns of turbulence in the wind.
